The quintessential screen version of Shakespeare's classic. Zeffirelli is realy in his element here. Everything from the medieval buildings to the street fights looked authentic. And the cinematography was majestic.

  • Vital Shakespeare!

First of all, I am grateful for the reviewer Elizabeth and I am in harmony with her enthusiasm. I was just about the age that the character of Romeo should have been (16) when the film was first released, and I saw it on the big screen. There couldn't have been a more perfect Juliet than Olivia Hussey, and I will always be her fan (by the way, she was also magnificent in "Jesus of Nazareth"). This film is one of my very favorites in every way - it is a message of Love Triumphant; just by dint of its existance, and even consumed by Death, Love is superior to all else in the Universe.

I have a hard time beginning to express my deep love and gratitude for this movie. If you don't believe in love, you will after seeing Zeffirelli's masterpiece. Even with the tragic ending, it makes you want to fall in love and begin that journey of ecstasy and turmoil. Every scene was beautiful and the actors were chosen well. It's my favorite movie of all time....and I'm only 24 years old.
