Iris, a middle-aged woman, is left with nothing when her she divorces her rich husband. Having alienated her family following an affair with a younger man and possessing no professional skills, she is forced to go to work as a housekeeper for a wealthy married couple, Paula and Leo Tanner, who are summering in Maine. Iris soon learns the Tanner marriage is not made in heaven. When Leo announces that it's over, Iris helps Paula through the painful divorce and her severe depression, while at the same time learning to move on with her own life.
