Real-estate agent Ellen Carson, a woman trying to juggle a family and a demanding job, is tailgated for miles by an estranged delivery man, Eddie, after she inadvertently cuts him off in heavy traffic. Ellen reports Eddie to his employer, and when he is fired -- this being one of many instances of unprofessional behavior -- he turns his anger on Ellen, her husband, Jim, a contractor, and their young daughter, Cynthia. Their lives become nightmares filled with disorientation, insecurity and fear as Eddie ransacks the family's home, causes a horrendous accident at Jim's new building site, and briefly kidnaps Cynthia, as he prepares to wreak his final revenge.
