  • While a student at the Czech film school, Yelena Machinova wrote a provocative graduate thesis which her professors hoped to produce as a feature. But when the young woman married noted writer-dissident Pavel Kohout (co-author with Vaclav Havel of the Charter 77 human rights document), the production was cancelled. In 1978 the Kohouts emigrated to Austria, and Pavel turned his wife's script into a novel.
