Mr. Blanding's comment about James Craig
- TCM fan
Every time I see James Craig in a film now, I think of the viewer who called himself Mr. Blandings, and his comment below. James Craig was a very fine looking man who played opposite the likes of Hedy Lamarr, Lana Turner and Ava Gardner, and I always enjoy his films. I must comment about Mr. Blanding's awful "poor man's Clark Gable" statement - 1. All men can't be Clark Gable - there was only one. 2. any man who played the lead with those leading ladies must have something going for him.
A Must See for Ava Gardner Fans
TCM - PLEAASE show this one again! Great, light, funny, entertaining movie with Ava at her most gorgeous.
adding star rating
If I want to watch it more than once, I give it 4 stars. Cute upbeat movie because of Ava.
Ava is great - this is a great movie
Ava is the star of the show and she makes it worth the viewing. She had style and class from early on. Cute movie, very entertaining and unpredictable. I've enjoyed it more than once.
Wake me up later...

When this glockfest is over. Everybody speaks in a stilted way, except Ava. She must've had a great stylist right off the bat because she gets stunning clothes in every movie! Even off-duty photos of her show wonderful threads.Anyhow, skip this movie and move on to something worthwhile. My advice.
thier off! just in time for racing season
Ava Gardner ,young & pert, amusing plot, classic race track sequences, highly recommend for all ages
She Went to the Races (1945)
- Mr. Blandings
The lead actors are entirely bland and unlikeable in this pointless, ridiculous, and sometimes offensive, movie about horse racing. James Craig really was the poor man's Clark Gable and doesn't even have 1/100th the talent and charm. Edmund Gwenn is completely wasted, but Ava Gardner manages quite easily (thanks to the film's ineffective leads) to shine through this miasmic mess as a star-in-the-making that will quickly rise above the rest. * out of *****
Good quirky little comedy. Craig and Gifford are attractive. Ava is beautiful and wonderful. Loved the three scientists. The scene between Frances and Ava is amazing. All in all a great little movie.
