A young woman falls under the Svengali-like spell of a magician, Oliver Haddo, who intends to kill her and use her blood to create new life. The film, atmospheric and visually stunning, heavily influenced later films like FRANKENSTEIN and BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, especially in the laboratory sequences. Too often neglected by film historians and rarely shown, THE MAGICIAN has a gripping climax and ranks with PHANTOM OF THE OPERA as perhaps the best American horror film of the silent era. The suave malignity of Paul Wegener as Haddo is magnetic and chilling. A must see for horror film aficianados.
