  • Ugly and empty lives of the aristocracy

This film is all about the shallow, ugly, empty and pointless waste of life that is the aristocracy. It's unpleasant to watch, and a powerful argument in favor of inheritance taxes. The characters are absurd, though frighteningly real. It's like an early version of the Kar-trashians, but without the ghetto style.

  • Witty and shocking!

This movie has some incredibly witty lines, beautiful clothes and is also quite shocking. I enjoyed it immensely.

  • Fantastic!

Extraordinary film and a visual feast! The furs, gowns and jewels are simply gorgeous and tell of a time when both men and women dressed to the nines, not only in the evening but during the day as well. It is easy to see George Cukor's hand in this film, as he was always a stickler for detail and it shows here. Constance Bennett is certainly in the role of her career here and she is marvelous in the lead as the amoral and listless wife of a husband who is a gold-digger and faithless to boot. I always believed Constance was a better actress than her sister, Joan, and this film goes a long way to proving it. Joan is always so dour in her roles but Constance was a great comedic actress. In case anyone doubts the presence of Americans in this English setting in the 1930s, it is best to recall this was the time of the American, Wallis Warfield Simpson, who created such an enormous scandal by using her wiles to catch the future King of England - Edward VIII who left the throne for "the woman I love." Wallis had a coterie of American friends who helped her wind her way into English society and many of the women, in particular, were exactly as portrayed by Constance Bennett in this film. This film was billed as a satire but it is closer to truth than most realize! How I wish this film was shown more often!

I'm surprised that with the success of shows like Project Runway that this movie isn't shown more often. The costume designs are absolutely exquisite. I would watch this again and again if it were sold on DVD!!!!

  • Loved it!

This pre-Code film was extremely entertaining and quite scandalous! The performances are wonderful and the 30s fashion is fantastic.

  • Great Movie-Spectacular Gowns

Classic movie from the 30's. Not to be missed by movie buffs. The gowns are incredible. Any student of fashion should put this movie on their "must see list" just for the beautiful designs.
