Familiar faces and a crackling script
- Lee Davis
- 12/15/12
"Dance, Charlie, Dance" sounds like a dopey title, but that's part of the joke in this sly, non-stop Broadway backstage comedy. With familiar character actors in just about every role, you know you're in good hands as a small town hotel employee comes to NYC to invest some family money in a play and partners with a desperate producer to mount a dog of a show. Alan Jenkins, Glenda Farrell, Chester Clute and Frank Faylen are in top form, and while I have never understood the comic appeal of Stu Erwin, he serves well as the center of a swirling, wisecracking plot that satisfies. If Mel Brooks saw this in his youth, it likely served as inspiration for The Producers. Look for this one.

I really enjoyed this movie. I really want to see it again. I chanced upon this movie by accident and I would like to buy it or at least watch it again. Now I know where they got the idea for The Producers. I think Mel Brooks must have stole the idea!
