Widmark and Poitier's excellent adventure
- Jack Jacoby
Although both screen greats were wildly miscast, and the movie has a comic strip feel to it, nevertheless, Widmark and Poitier, (good friends in real life) always entertain on the screen. In this action packed costumer, the Viking and the Moor join forces in search of a great treasure, a giant gold bell. It's great fun, good action sequences and nice support from Oscar Homolka, athletic Russ Tamblyn and beautiful Rosanna Schiaffino. It is the second of three films for Widmark and Poitier, including Sid's debut in the 1950 drama, No Way Out. Widmark and Poitier make this worth a look.
The Long Ships
...Ok, i agree this is a "classic" adventure film! Widmark and Poitier have "magic" together on the screen and their "pairing" has made XLNT movies! (see "The Bedford Incident") Richard Widmark has been under-rated for years as a great film icon-who will ever forget his chilling laugh in "Kiss of Death"! i LOVED this actor-a screen "legend" up there with Mitchum and Heston! This is just a splendid film for "adventure/enjoy/share with yer bored kids"-to prove to them that bloodshed can be "alluded to"-i.e. "the Mare of Steel" without being shown-geez, did this "item of torture" give you the creeps or what?! There is humor, action, romance, excitement, and just general good fun -a film not to be missed-i cannot say enough as i have loved this film since i first saw it YEARS AGO!
Long on Adventure
- Paul Conrad Jackson
The Long Ships is a rollicking good adventure of the old school. Think Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power! A very different vehicle for Richard Widmark. This is a real swashbuckling movie. Beautifil maidens, and courageous men. Popcorn stuff in purity. Top-notch entertainment. Five out of five stars.
The Long Ships: is the best movie ever
- Jery St. Onge
The Long Ships is the best movie ever and is due for a preview by all. This movie is spectacular in all aspects with great stars and acting. The story line is about a legend of a Great Golden Bell worth millions and the quest to find out if this fabulous legendary story was true or not. A great story and a lost classic. A must see...
