Oliver Cannon, a shy reporter for Sage Magazine , is assigned to cover a naval expedition in Little America by Harvey Sweigert, his managing editor, who is also the father of Oliver's fiancée, Sharon. Pete Santelli, a photographer, is assigned to accompany Oliver, and the two become fast friends. Their first stop is Christchurch, New Zealand, and there Pete meets and falls in love with Diana. Oliver is strongly attracted to Tiare, a half-Maori, and a brawl ensues when George Snell, a rival journalist, makes some unkind remarks about her. While in Antarctica, Oliver tries to create a scoop for himself by trying to influence Mickey, a pleasant Russian scientist with the expedition, to defect, but the admiral in charge of the expedition, having been informed of the plan by Snell, objects to Oliver's plan. Pete and Oliver persuade the admiral to have some women flown in to demonstrate the habitability of the Antarctic region, and they are not surprised when Diana and Tiare are among the group who arrive. Mickey falls in love with Tiare, marries her, and announces his intention to defect to New Zealand, thus providing Oliver and Pete with their much-wanted defection scoop. The admiral, however, refuses to allow the information to be released and orders the radio shack to be placed out of bounds to the reporters. The celebration that takes place when Pete and Diana are married, however, provides Oliver the opportunity to sneak into the shack and radio his story to the magazine. Oliver goes home, having established the reputation of being an ace reporter, and marries Sharon.
