Hans Wagner, a Cincinnati brewer who is Grand Imperial Chief of the Loyal Order of Squirrels, goes to his old Central European home, Altheim, accompanied by his daughter, Nellie, and is accorded a flattering reception. The Prince of Pilsen, who is unhappy about his impending marriage to Princess Bertha of a neighboring principality, arrives as Hans is inviting the villagers to a banquet; seeing that the prince is interested in his daughter, Hans introduces him as the son of a friend. At the banquet, Hans, in his lodge uniform, is mistaken for the prince and is driven to the castle of Thorwald; assuming that he is being "initiated," he allows himself to be taken to Princess Bertha. Meanwhile Nellie and the prince, in pursuit, are waylaid by bandits and spend the night in a cave, but they arrive at the castle in time to prevent Hans from being executed for imposture. The princess, who has fallen in love with Hans, relinquishes the prince to Nellie, and all ends happily.
