I agree with the TCM community about this film. Yes I think it's a bit scatter brained in the beginning but so rewarding if you stick with it. John Barrymore's performance is beyond words. You just have to see it for yourself. Mary Astor is captivating and wasn't yet 20 years old. I think Alec B. Francis is also very good. I find it fascinating to compare how these and many other wonderful actors performed during both their silent and sound era movie careers. TCM makes that possible and is such a welcomed alternative to the ear splitting sound effects and CGI mutants that so often pass for movie entertainment these days.
for worse ..and better.
either the story of a downfall or the triumph of an effort. it made me cry a bit.
Impressive Barrymore & Musical Score
- Christine in GA
The muscial score is just terrific and one of the best I have ever heard anywhere. It really added to the film. Excellent Barrymore performance; I couldn't take my eyes off him. Devastating ending. Great movie.
I'm not a big silent movie fan but this a must see -- I could not take my eyes off this film. The performance of.John Barrymore was over the top and I was so moved by this movie of unrequited love, the tears were flowing @ the end.

I Love the Great Profile
My family does not understand my love for silent movies but John Barrymore's performances are part of the attraction. The modern music score adds so much texture to this film, especially the repeated love theme. The film feels slow and frivolous especially at first, but the payoff comes toward the end as Beau loses his looks, money and influence at court. Barrymore powerfully demonstrates his acting chops as he removes his "dandy" makeup and reveals the weakened, yet proud Beau Brummel underneath. Not a perfect film but the ending delivers and then delivers some more. If this film is ever released on DVD with the modern score, I'm buying it. A must-see for silent film lovers and film preservationists.
I never really watched a full silent movie before, i was suprised i could sit through it, but the plot was very captivating, and John Barrymore was very entertaining. It was like watching John Carry with all the emotion he could display in his reactions. I LOVED the score, I'm trying to find out if i can find some of the songs on itunes, but i can not.
Beau Brummel (1924)
I saw only about the last 40 min. of this but it looked great. The new music score is wonderful! Please show it again!
