This has to be one of the best silent films, or even movies in general, I have ever seen. I do not know why it not more well known. The film has everything - adventure, action, heart, and a beautiful message of courage and hope. The performances are all top-notch, the screenplay keeps you watching till the end, this is simply an amazing movie, you can hardly tell it is over 90 years old! I wish Hollywood nowadays would take an example!
This is an excellent film, not to be missed. Apparently, in the 1920's there were places where abandoned children were housed in horrible conditions in farm camps in remote places where escape was almost impossible. They were at the mercy of the owners of these baby camps. In this case, the camp was located in an alligator-infested swamp. These children were poorly fed and clothed, emotionally neglected and abused and used as slave labor farm hands. Mary Pickford portrays "Molly", a young teenager, who cares for the younger children. The owners of the camp were also conspirators with crooks who abducted babies and toddlers of wealthy people, hiding the kidnapped children in their camp until ransom is paid, then they drown the kids to avoid capture. The title "Sparrows" is taken from the Bible passage about God seeing to the needs of all of his creations--as an example, sparrows, who don't worry about where their food will come from, so you shouldn't worry either because God will help you, too. Molly reads Bible stories to the children, who pray for help repeatedly. I won't spoil the plot, but their prayers are answered. This film is very much worth seeing. All the actors do an amazing job, especially the little kids and Mary Pickford.
Excellent Silent Film
- Dan Griissom
This is the only movie by Mary Pickford that I've actually seen and man, is it a good one! I read about this movie in a film book when I was in college on a list of the best 'horror films' of all time. I guess this film could be put in that category for some of the scenes. Do yourself a favor and watch this gem of a silent movie and to see Mary Pickford even if it is towards the end of her famous career. Four stars.
Mary Pickford Soars in Sparrows
One of Mary Pickford's finest films. Mary and entire cast are outstanding in a spellbinding drama that can't help but touch the viewer in a profound way. Just loved this film. Please TCM show this again soon.

This is one of Mary Pickford's best silent films, and also one of her best performances. Spooky, and touching as well, and it's unusual and fascinating piece of cinematic history. Beautifully done.
