If you watch Father's Little Dividend, keeping in mind the time in which it was made, it explores a number of timeless themes that were pretty much overlooked by the movies up to that point. In that sense, it is somewhat of a trend-setter. The movie explores issues of mid-life crisis, of empty nest syndrome, of the fear of the change a baby will bring to a household, and the fear of the pain of "natural" childbirth. The only real problem with the film is it has somewhat of a weak ending. It's a fairly short movie and the first hour is solid, but the last 20 minutes or so, really break down, especially when Stanley Banks loses the baby. And I couldn't help but wonder what they called the child for the first five months of his life. Was it 'Hey baby?' You have to watch the film to understand that last comment. But, all in all I would recommend it.
