Rashomon
- Dashiell Barnes
- 8/10/12
Kurosawa's first international hit that won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar of '51. Four different people, which include Mifune, Kyo & Shimura, offer different viewpoints on a samurai's murder & the rape of his wife. Shot under a forest with damp light, Kurosawa create's a film about discovering truth to distinguish good & evil and the reaffirmation of human goodness. A powerful film that will forever be a part of world cinema. I give it a 4.5/5.

Japanese Cinema may be one of the last under-appreciated film genres on this planet. Simple stories, great acting, and uncompromising gut-wrenching historical reality. The more you watch, the more you want to see. Here is one of the the first and one of the finest of these films, with the great Toshiro Mifune leading the story, from an industry inspired by and paralleling the spirit of Hollywood films of the same era. Once you get a taste of classic Japanese film, you will be hooked forever.

The atmosphere in Rashomon is down right tence and very unique. Toshiro Mifune was super in it. He would later go on to Hollywood and play in WWII Japanese invasion films. Really liked this one... .
