A man's efforts to save his friend's marriage lead to infidelity.

Christine Bonner, a beautiful but frail young woman, leads an unhappy married life, stifled by her adoring husband Sam's overprotectiveness. After living apart from Sam for a time Christine agrees to return to him with the understanding that she is to live an unsheltered life and have a child. Shortly thereafter she meets Murray Logan, a publisher friend of Sam's who also is unhappily married. His wife, Sibyl, blames him for an automobile accident that left her facially scarred and took the life of their son. Despite his attraction to Christine, Murray does all he can to help Sam effect a reconciliation. Sometime later the two couples decide to take a vacation in Greece. In the end Sam is forced to remain at home because of his father's illness; Murray takes Christine to see the Acropolis while Sibyl remains in her hotel room. Near the end of the trip, Sibyl runs off with a philandering Englishman, but not before informing Sam of his wife's "lurid" romance. Sam races to Greece and discovers that Christine has fallen gravely ill with pneumonia. Before dying, she makes Murray promise to visit the tiny Grecian isle they hoped to see together.
