The working title of this film was Flag Over Tarawa. Although March 1958 Hollywood Reporter news items and production charts place Steve Ross, Roy Sickner, Joseph Breen, Patrick Colby, Wade Cagle, Robin Riley, Lee Winters, Carl York, Ted Jordan, Edward Stroll, Burns Oliver and William Bakewell in the cast, Bakewell was not in the released film and the appearance of the other actors has not been confirmed. According to a May 1958 Hollywood Reporter news item, the Marine Corps refused to cooperate with producer Charles Schneer in the making of the film because the script referred to the enemy as "Japs" and the Pentagon felt the story contained an "implied criticism of officer personnel by some elements of enlisted personnel."
The film's stars, Ray Danton and Julie Adams, were husband and wife in real life. For additional information on other films about the battles of Guadalcanal and Tarawa, please consult the entries for the 1950 Republic picture Sands of Iwo Jima in AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1941-50 and Battlecry.
