Excellent movie. True to reality!!
Great WW2 Movie
This is one of my favorite WW2 movies, while some favor Steve McQueen's The Great Escape, I like this muscular film starring George Peppard with fine support by Richard Johnson and a cameo by Lili Palmer. This story about the brave Commando's fighting the Nazi war machine is very well done. Peppard does very well as the Star of Opeation Crossbow. Sophia Loren has a small cameo but garners top billing due to her stature as a great International Star and also because Ms. Loren's husband Carlo Ponti produced this exciting film for MGM.
George Peppard's Great War Movie
- David ATkins
George Peppard was groomed by MGM and made several films at that studio at the begining of his career such as "Subterreans", Vincente Minneli's great "Home From The Hill" and John Ford's civil war segment in "How The West Was Won"...Peppard was loaned out to Paramount for 2 colossal hits "Breakfast at Tiffany's and "The Carpetbaggers" as well as Carl Foreman's "The Victors" at Columbia. After all these films Peppard was a huge International Movie Star. MGM had his contract and insisted on a movie before he gained his release and the cast him in this pounding, terrific WW2 Movie.Starring with Sophia Loren, Richard Johnson ( then married to Kim Novak) and cast of very able performers this is a fine and somewhat overlooked gem of a film worthy of the inclusion of Peppard's great hits.
