I just wonder why, "Ironclads is not on DVD. It should be. how about it. Many, many people want to purchase the DVD. I am just one of them. Let me know if you are going to release it on DVD. Thank You, James Martin Russell

  • This one ought to be available in BluRay.

This review will be short and sweet. The visuals alone make this film a classic worth having for those with an interest in the War to Prevent Southern Independence. It is a sin for it not to be available in BluRay (or even in DVD format), especially during this 150th anniversary of the battle. Some wise executive in the distant future will realize its potential and will make a lot of money re-releasing it properly. That wisdom doesn't seem to exist today.

  • Another hard to get great movie

Ironclads, like most of Turner's Civil War stories is an excellently produced and acted feature. Sadly it is also one that is impossible to find on DVD or Blu-Ray.

When I first saw this movie back in the 'good old days' of the 1990's, Virginia Madsen portrays herself as a quite a spy for the Damn Yanks. Using her charm, wit, and sophistication, she and her accomplice get the information about the "Merrimack" yet in the end, she loses both men she cared for. A woman torn between herold lover in the South and her new lover in the North, Virginia plays her part perfectly. Pity the entertainment godsdidn't consider her or making a DVD of this film. It was a stale mate at Hampton Road a 'cheese box on a raft' todepict the Monitor. Monitor's pivoting guns and rotating turret vs the Merrimack's 3 guns port and starboard and a pivot gun at the bow, to shoot at each other. Good quality show down I.M.H.O. I hope the original cast might comeback to do a remake to allow more romance and of course, closeups of the engagement.

The film "Ironclads" (1991), sheds light on one of the most fascinating battles of the Civil War. Depicted in movies as mostly a land war those unacquianted with the many innovations of the world's first truly modern war will find this film not only educational but extremely entertaining. Though many Americans are familiar with the names "Monitor" and "Merrimac", the personalities involved, and the events leading up to the epic confrontation remain hidden in the mists of time. Though the film was made in 1991 and is not available on DVD it would make an excellent companion to The Hunley (1999). Perhaps Turner Classic Movies could release them as a double feature DVD. The market is out there for good Civil War films.
