In the late 1920's, the Duc de Richleau and his friend Rex Van Ryn arrive at the home of the Duc's protégé, Simon Aron, and find that he is hosting a party for an international secret society he has just joined. After learning that the society is actually a cult of Satanists led by the high priest Mocata and the Countess d'Urfe, the Duc and Van Ryn discover that the real purpose of the gathering is to make plans for initiating Simon and the countess' beautiful niece, Tanith, into the coven. Despite the efforts of the Duc to thwart the plan, Mocata uses his hypnotic powers to lure both Simon and Tanith to a wooded glade for the initiation. But the Duc and Van Ryn succeed in destroying the Devil, conjured up by Mocata's incantation, and lead Simon and Tanith to the home of mutual friends, the Eaton family. Tanith, however, refuses to endanger the Eatons by staying at their house and goes off alone. Van Ryn, who has fallen in love with her, follows but is too late to save her from death. Quick to act, the Duc shields the others at the Eaton home by drawing out a protective circle and warding off the powers of darkness with ritualistic and holy symbols. During the night of terror that follows, young Peggy Eaton succumbs to Mocata's powers and is prepared for the Devil's sacrificial altar. As the Satanists summon the Angel of Death to ride out and claim his victim, the Duc and his friends intervene and rescue Peggy from the altar. Deprived of his intended victim, the Devil--following the ancient tradition that decrees he must carry off someone when called out--seizes Mocata as his own. Tanith is restored to life, and the cult is destroyed.
