You're thinking of Airport '75, which also starred Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. Mid air collision between a 747 and a smaller plane. Airplane! was based on the film "Zero Hour" which involved a case of food poisoning on a trans-Canadian flight.

I woke up in the middle of the night last night and couldn't sleep, so I turned on the TV. I came across The Crowded Sky, which I had never seen before nor heard of, and since I love airplane movies, I turned to TCM. Imagine my surprise when within minutes, I was shocked and laughing. I always thought the movie Airplane! was a parody of the old Airport movies, but I was wrong! Scene after scene, line after line, I couldn't believe how the Zuckers used those things in their Airplane! movie. TCS was so self-serious, but laughed most of the way through. The most obvious was the camera shots of characters as we heard their thoughts. Anyone who loves the original Airplane! MUST watch The Crowded Sky. You will have a blast watching, just as I did.

The Crowded Sky is a good human intrest movie, and a good pre airplane movie, most of the caracters are very likeable. I have seen it before and I enjoyed seeing it again on tcm.

  • Airport Precursor

Disjointed dramedy can't decide whether it's a romantic comedy, a suspenseful disaster film or a multiple POV human interest melodrama. In many ways, it was the precursor of the Airport series. If you're a fan of that genre, this entry has some historical interest. Several good actors are either wasted or poorly directed in this colorful and fastmoving mishmosh. When TCM showed this as part of a lineup including Airplane! and Zero Hour!, it made for an instructive six-hour thesis on the genesis and evolution of movie plots in Hollywood.

I did extensive research into the year 1960 back in the 80's for my "Return to 1960" cartoon calendar and as the title of this movie suggests, air traffic control had become a major problem in the United States by that time. Now imagine how it would have been with the number of flights we have now! I really can't wait to see this movie.
