Stumbled across this shown 5/15/13 while recovering from cataract surgery.Really caught my attention with 1st rate cast,Joe Cotten and Ms Ava,but quite great performances by Dirk as young priest and the elder priest.Hope to see it broadcast again, soon. Thanks,TCM for brightening my day, although it wasn't a happy film,it was a MUST SEE.

I stumbled across this film on TCM one afternoon and found myself watching a truly fine film, one that has received little or no attention, but one that should now receive its due. The subject matter is difficult, as the Spanish Civil War was a setting of sheer brutality and inhumanity, and because the struggle within a man (let alone a priest!) as to whether a woman or God will carry sway in his heart is gut-wrenchingly real. The black-and-white photography helps to cast clarity to this dual plight. Dirk Bogarde is convincing in his portrayal of a priest who has turned his back upon his calling, if not his heart. Ava Gardner always manages to convey a sensitivity and vulnerability that lingers beneath her stunning beauty. And Joseph Cotton offers yet another impeccable and impressive performance. I would love to see Robert Osborne or Ben Mankiewicz offer an introduction some evening.
