OK story & acting and of course Harryhausen is always on top. What bothers me is that a farmer's pitchfork could pierce and stay in the creature but .30 caliber carbine ammo can't.Seemed weird.
I watched the final scene of this movie and laughed so hard that I cried. The monster gets in a fight with an elephant and the elephant's keeper tries to break it up! Guess what happened to him. I love tose 50's sci-fi movies as they are usually a hoot.
An excellent scifi film. I enjoyed it thoroughly especially the acting by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton....
Pure Science Fiction...
Nathan Juran deftly directs this tidy, purely driven science fiction film about travel to outer space with possible negative consequences. After an Earth rocket ship exploration team crashes into the Mediterranean Sea upon its return , we find that they had brought back a "space" specimen, otherwise now known as "Ymir", the Venusian creature with a bad habit for the taste of sulphur. Col. Bob Calder(William Hopper) is in charge of the recovery team,to obtain all remnants and life forms that may exist from the sunken spaceship. The rest of the story centers on the travels of 'Ymir" and they are wide and varied. Juran establishes the fact that our earthly 'visitor" is the victim, and not responsible for the chaos he causes. And mans explorations must be tempered with wisdom when dealing with interplanetary forces, well done Nathan.Look for a cameo at the Zoo for the man throwing peanuts to the elephant, yep it's Ray Harryhausens back, some cameo. A genuine sci-fi classic. 5 stars out of 5. B & W . Some color prints do exist.
20 000, 000 miles to earth
perhaps others that view this (even the coloured preesentation) will not be able to recognize the very diificult and pains taking procedure that is required to be realized on the screen. the cgi effects at a directors reach while breathtaking, will never be one up on dynamation. If only the ymir could land in my grasp, wow.
A good Family movie to see
A good B/W movie to add to a Science Fiction Collection. Also a must see for a Ray Harryhausen fan. Man meets woman.Man meets creature.Man falls in love with woman. Man kills creature. Man and woman live happy ever after. The end.
