This is the American answer to "Alfie" with a much more mature man in the lead and a large group of neurotic women who want him. The title character "Petulia" is nutty as a fruitcake and her story somehow seems to bog this film down. Frankly, I was bored out of my gourd with the whole mess! Why any of these good actors agreed to make this film is beyond me. They must have needed the money!

This movie is not supposed to make you feel good...it's supposed to make you think about life and relationships. Julie Christie is superb as always and so is George C. Scott. Metrosexual Richard Chamberlain adds an interesting element to the proceedings, and so does Joseph Cotten in an extended cameo as RC's father. The film's jagged timeline keeps its viewer on tenterhooks, wondering where Julie Christie's character will end up. It's really a story about post-traumatic stress and recovery. Great, provocative piece of cinema.

The movie has style, well edited, but it lacks feeling for the characters. A very empty unfeeling film. I just found it on the unpleasant side. It's not bad, just kind of there. Great cast, always love seeing Julie Christie.
