Life Begins/A Child Is Born
- Diane Branham
I watched this movie at 6:45 this morning and I loved getting a glimpse of how different and beautiful things were so long ago when a woman went to the hospital to have their baby possibly a week before the unknown actual due date. I was mesmerized, listening to every word. I left the tv on this channel, so hours later another movie came on while I was cleaning my room and when I heard the same dialog of "Life Begins" at the beginning of this other movie, "A Child Is Born", I thought, "What is going on here"?. Now I've found out A Child Is Born-1940 is the remake of Life Begins-1932. Now you know, watch them both. Wonderful movies. :)
Where to look
I just want to know where I can watch or buy this movie. I love Glenda Farrell and I know I love this movie too if I could only watch it!
Life Begins with Loretta Young
Unexpected ending. I would recommend this movie. Life begins when her baby is born and when she dies and thus her new life begins in heaven. It made my wife tear up. How can a movie from 1932 still bring excitement, laughter and sadness during the end. It has its funny moments at certain points. I can relate with this movie as I had six kids of my own and would pace the floors up and down. I enjoyed listening to the women talk amongst one another. We also enjoyed watching the hair styles and doctors and nurses during that era. I did not know they had x-rays during those days.....wow.
This film really made me and my sisters tear up. It's quite sad, but also very beautiful.
You never find out the story behind the murder, or even the history of all of the women in the ward, but it doesn't matter. The story is about what happens in the ward. I watched it with my grandmother around Christmas 2009, and it was one of my most memorable movie watching experiences. We shared so much, talking about this movie, and I am so grateful it was on TCM.
Such a sad movie...

I was channel surfing and came across the mid to end of this movie. I would love to watch again from the beginning. I understand the emotions of the maternity ward(mom of 2) I am a fan of Loretta Young. She had me in tears so early this morning.
