Jimmy The Gent is rapid fire funny
This is a very funny movie. Jimmy Cagney's lines are said in rapid fire you have to watch it twice to get all the jokes. Bette Davis is adorable as the object of Jimmy the Gent's affections. Cute ending.
Jimmy the Gent (1934)
- James Higgins
Anything with James Cagney, Bette Davis and directed by Michael Curtiz could not possible be bad, and it isn't. Although not a major movie in 1934, it is fast paced and fun. The cast does well. Bette Davis has never made anything that was not good. It's a very entertaining movie. James Cagney runs a missing heir chasing business, often producing fake heirs so he can get paid. Bette Davis works for a legitimate rival company and happens to be Cagney's ex-girlfriend.The sparks fly when Cagney starts investigating the company Davis works for. Cagney's buzz cut was his way of protesting the studio type casting him in formula films.
Davis & Cagney Deal with Dishonesty
James Cagney was a 35 year old who'd already made it big in "The Public Enemy" (1931). Bette Davis was a 25 year old who was on the brink of creating the most acclaimed acting career a woman ever had. This was the 1st of 4 films in which Davis starred in 1934. Cagney's hair was shaved to make him look like the gangster he became so famous for playing. He's Davis' love interest all but for the crooked business he's in: arranging false inheritance claims & taking a nice cut for himself. She doesn't know it, but is working for his 'business' rival who's more of a gent. Jimmy, trying win over Davis, schemes with his rival to trade a small fortune for lessons to become a gent. Davis becomes the apple of both men's eyes. Superb acting.
