"Cast a Giant Shadow" was reasonably bad until it got into the war part and Frankie went up into the air in an unarmed plane, except for a bottle of seltzer, which he sprayed at enemy aircraft because it was all he had.C'mon everybody knows a better inclusion at that point would have been John Wayne saying l'chaim as if he had a part in Muddler on the Roof. Couldn't beat that!

As a fan of both war movies and historical epics I was already primed to love this movie. It deals well with the period and I loved Kirk Douglas in the part. Yes it's long (at least by modern short-attention-span standards) and it isn't a model of modern cinema directing, but the screenplay keeps your attention while dealing well with the issues. As a war movie, the actual battle scenes are weak but effective in driving the plot and the Sinatra Seltzer bomb moment is great!

Jeez, I didn't think it was ever going to end! Way overlong and far too many repetitive scenes and slow stretches. Kirk Douglas gives a sincere performance, and the basic story is an interesting one. Senta berger is miscast and the spattering of big name stars in cameo roles distracts from the film. (John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner etc.)
