  • Fiddler on the Roof

The extravagant musical which won the '71 Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture- Musical/ Comedy. Topol won the Golden Globe as a father of three young women whom he wants to marry off, Frey and Mann were nominated for an Oscar and Globe, respectively, as two men vying for one of his daughters. Won Oscars for Cinematography, Adapted score and Sound; but despite the films memorable songs, the film is too long and boring at times. Entertaining at times, but also predictable and dull. I give it a 3.5/5.

Winner of 3 Academy Awards, nominated for 8, including Best Actor (London stage star, Topol, as Tevye), Best Picture and Best Director in a "joyful and jubilant musical masterpiece" (NY Daily News), featuring memorable songs: "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker," and "Sunrise, Sunset." "Fiddler on the Roof" is a universal story of love, hope, tradition, and eventually acceptance of reality in a world turning upside down. Boxoffice magazine: "an outstanding accomplishment in every category," this lavishly produced and acclaimed screen adaptation of the international stage sensation tells the life-affirming story of Tevye a poor Jewish milkman whose love, pride and profound faith help him to face the anti-Semitic oppression of czarist Russia in 1905. (Before the Communist Revolution was worse, killing 30 million poor people.) "Fiddler on the Roof" also teaches Jewish history and many delightful traditions, validated by a charmingly witty Rabbi. Following the Intermission, grandiose, Marxist political slogans are parlayed into commonsensical realities by a young, wise woman and her loving father, Tevye. Then heterosexual marriage is translated into 25 years of mutually respecting, daily loving kindnesses by Mr. & Mrs. milkman. Romances are realized respectfully. Babies are born. Blessed too is a new sewing machine. But intermarriage, outside of the Jewish faith is not. (Not until the very end, when everyone emigrates.) Then the government pogroms, eminent domain confiscations of every Jew's private property, are rationalized with surprisingly good-humored quips. Even with the forced Diaspora, folks have hope in the New World, America.

Excellent film, although TCM managed to get the films reels mixed up somehow and started the film at the end of sTzeitel's wedding!!

There is so very much to love about this film! There is no doubt as to why it won the Academy Award for Best Picture! I love the mother's caustic wit and the father's constant frustrations. The daughters and their suitors are all wonderful as well. The film is completely resonant around the outstanding score. Those of us long, long married will more than understand the words to "Do You Love Me?" Those young will know "Matchmaker." We parents will certainly have heartaches listening to "Sunrise, Sunset." There is something in this film for all of us and, if you are students of history and/or Judaism, you will see it unfold in front of you! There are several dance sequences which are brilliantly choreographed and raise your spirits. I saw this film the day it was released into the theaters and I have watched it each time it's been shown on TCM. It is simply one of the best!

A wonderful musical centered around a father (Chaim Topol) of five daughters both clinging and letting go of the threads of tradition when Russia is undergoing their communist revolution. It deals with lifting stricter religious practices that were observed during a time period long gone, but still not forgotten. Great eastern Europe scenery. Cast is amazing and you'll find Perchik, a young Paul Michael Glaser, a.k.a. "Starsky." This is a great film that you'll enjoy seeing over and over because it never gets old.

This film is such an experience! It has everything: drama, humor, sorrow and happiness. It truly depicts what life is about and no matter how difficult the situation, you just have to stay determined to survive. The music is spell binding as are the incredible dance routines.

When I first seen "Fiddler on the roof" i think i was in the 6 the grade. I didn't like is as much as i like it now. One of my favorite songs is Chava Lament. I like it because it explains how no matter what u do u can never choose which way to go. B/W your faith and your heart.
