Att. Kevin, always enjoyed reading your comments even (especially) when I didnt agree with you. WHAT HAPPENED ? TOP HAT was and is pure escape. then in the 1930s for a world in deep depression and on the verge of global warfare . Nobody in there right mind in those days took these characters for real. you have a right to your opinion, but I THINK YOUR LOOKING TO HARD. Just enjoy.
enjoy the analogy
Astaire and rogers did for dancing in a movie.. what ali and fraiser did for boxing in a ring.
Kevin, you're wrong
Kevin, You're the doofus. This is a splendid movie (though I prefer Swing Time). I am sure none of the actors who played second fiddle to Fred and Ginger would have felt they needed your condolences.

The people I feel sorry for in this film are Eric Blore, Helen Broderick, and Edward Everett Horton. They are the ones who have to carry the heavy load of a crappy screenplay and story while Fred and Ginger get to have a great ol time singing and dancing. These three never get a moment to shine, but instead must do their work in the soft underbelly of this film, where couples in the theatre make out and take bathroom breaks. To quote our doofus of a president, Sad!

The chemistry of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers is no better than in "Top Hat". They were an extraordinary dance team and the movies haven't seen anything better. "Top Hat" in 1935 was maybe their best that showed the elegance and class of this team. Here the songs of Irving Berlin combines with their dances in a magical way. A sophisticated and graceful couple on the dance floor...we need more of the same. They did make eight films together but there was more magic to "Top hat".
I watch this at least one a month- Top Hat
I have this on tape and watch it all the rime. I love the Cheek to Cheek dance and will go back and watch it again. Timeless and lovely. This movie is funny, romantic and entertaining. The songs are wonderful. I know people say it is the same plot as The Gay Divorcee but it is not. Each film stands on its own. Watch it and smile.
It's light hearted and funny. Great characters, Fred & Ginger, dancing.Who could ask for more to forget a grey winter's day. Always a favoriteof mine.

RKO's biggest financial hit was this Astaire & Rogers masterpiece. The duo share their most romantic moments in this film, particularly in the "Cheek to Cheek" dance number. The usual mistaken-identity story involves memorable scenes of dancing, elegant costumes & a glossy Art-deco Venice. This is the greatest pairing of Astaire & Rogers', period. I give it a 4.5/5.

Previous reviews : nobody noticed the cinematography of this movie. Look at this movie for its framing and black and white contrast. Top Hat is TOP NOTCH. The music is great. Without the focus and contrast, this movie is not as strong. Black and white dancing next to each other, spectacular. See Top Hat with this mind set and the movie gets much better.

Ginger is confused about Fred again
Fred's favorite movie.
Of all the movies Fred Astaire made, he considered "Top Hat" as his favorite. Now, that is really saying something! Considering how many absolutely fabulous movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers poured their heart and soul into. And while I enjoy every one I have seen, I especially love "Top Hat" for the superb comedy, as well as the dazzling and unique dance numbers. This movie is guaranteed to delight you through every bit of it!If you haven't seen it, shame on you! Get it as soon as you can, and show it to your family, your dinner guests, your young future olympic ice dancers, and anyone in need of a great big smile. You will end up watching it many times, I assure you.
Ginger and Fred
A simply great movie--Fred Astair has the most under-rated voice in movie history---and Ginger Rogers she could sing, dance, act and steal your heart away!
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers are absolutely brilliant in this movie. The songs and dances are beautiful. Fred is delightfully witty and suave. The rest of the cast is just as funny and entertaining to watch. Great storyline. A must see for Fred and Ginger fans!

This is one of my favorite Fred and Ginger movies, which in actuality, every movie they made together is one of my favorites. What a shame that these types of movies are no longer made. The songs, the choreography, and storylines are wonderfully romantic and beautiful!

A Pure Delight
This movie was my first Astaire and Rogers movie and by far my favorite. The comedy of the two is just outstanding. You can't go wrong spending your afternoon with those two in "Top Hat"!
All Around Delight
Swing Time gives it a run for the money, but Top Hat always edges out as my favorite of the wonderful Astaire-Rogers pictures. The dancing, music, acting, comedy--it's all there and I'd recommend this to anyone.
