IS CARRUTHERS A MURDERER?!
- Raymond Banacki
Low-budget excellence - the cast is so committed to the material - and the cast does make this fillm work - and Marshall Thompson does manage to hold it all together.
It! The terror from beyond.
The real gem in this movie is the rubber suit. The body fits fairly well and the excellently bizarre head is some-what loose and can be seen as a mask even at low resolution. The hands stand out as the weakest portion of the suit, floppy and very little articulation. What makes this suit work is the texture and design as well as the stunt man who plays IT. Credit goes to the director for the close ups and drama shots. Wonder what this would look like colorized and digitally enhanced for blu-ray.
A Horror Classic
The costume for the "monster" was used in at least two other movies that I know of, and those movies were pretty hoaky. But in this movie the director used lighting and camera angles to make the "monster" look much more hideous and menacing. Marshall Thompson's acting is superb.
Still Holds Up
Remember this movie from my youth & it's still scary. Sure beats the crap that's passing for horror movies today. Teenagers getting killed by the same monster over & over again. Give me a B movie with an interesting script, decent acting with adult actors & a monster you see mostly in the shadows. The movie makers of today should take note.
Scary for Young Kids, Laughable for Adults(1958)
If you are a youngster, maybe 10 years old, and watching on a big movie screen, this film has a much bigger impact, but if you are an adult, and know some science, then this film is highly laughable. The FIRST rule of Science Fiction, you must convince your audience that they are separated from conventional day to day reality. That is why Guns, Grenades ,and Dynamite do NOT work in Outer Space ! Period. A rescue crew has been sent to Mars to pickup the last survivor Marshall Thompson. They consider him to have murdered his crew, but he did not. That was done by "IT"(Ray"Crash" Corrigan), who does a great job of hamming it up as the "monster." Excellent lighting and camera angles are very effective in creating some real suspense and terror. But after you get past that the story gets dumb. The recue ship has been invaded by the same creature that killed Thompsons crew, except that the stowaway 'IT", is tough to kill , and seems intent on killing everyone. The fact that the space craft is travelling back to Earth adds to the dilemma. The script follows a traditional 1950's theme with a mostly male crew, two females, and a lack of Space knowledge to fill a tome. Plot gaps galore. Plus multiple safety violations. Unsecured Grenades, and a Bazooka from Point Blank range , you got to be kidding. Anyway, it still gets 4 stars out of 5, because the man in the rubber suit is good To Watch ! Guilty pleasure.
IT! The precursor to "Alien".
- Paul McGear
This is a very good movie, if you like monster and horror B-flicks. Somewhat of a precursor to "Alien", you know, monster on the loose in a space ship.
