  MGM cast Paul Newman and offered the female lead to a group of strong women superstars:Susan Hayward, Ava Gardner and a brilliant choice against type Lucille Ball, and we should be grateful the 3 leading actresses cited above turned down the role and Geraldine Page starred and stole the movie. Nominated for her brilliant performance, Ms. Page lost to Anne Bancroft.

  Y'know that thing, when you're watching a movie and you gotta pee, but you're waiting for a slow part? ... yeah ... You're gonna bust a gut on this one ... Newman is at his sexiest rogue best and Ms Page a deliciously vixen kitten; together they generate a crackling heat with the kind of dialogue that litters quotable gems like lingerie on a bordello laundry-room floor. Other story elements of social and political relevance also sparkle with the biting repartee of elegantly desperate people. That's my fav aspect of this film. Everyone, as befits the comportment of the times, presents the epitome of elegance on the outside, and the most profound deperation inside. Chance Wayne treads the finest line between the evil and the pure in him until his only freedom from desperation beats him to the saddest happy ending

  Uma obra prima de Tenesse Williams que foi adaptado para o cinema. O filme é um dos melhores e Paul Newman e Geraldine Page estão ótimos juntos. O filme é uma relíquia. Excelente.

  Paul Newman, Geraldine Page, Shirley Knight and Ed Begley in an Oscar-winning performance lead a star-studded cast in a bravura screen version of Tennessee Williams' hit Broadway stage play. Newman is Chance Wayne, a would-be actor, who brings a drug-addicted-alcoholic movie actress (Page) back to his Gulf Coast hometown, where he intends to re-new his relationship with his girlfriend (Knight), whose father (Begley; Best Supporting Actor Oscar) is the town's corrupt political boss, who intends to fix him up proper. The movie's director, Richard Brooks also wrote the adaptation screenplay. Paul Newman, Geraldine Page, Shirley Knight along with co-stars Rip Torn and Madeleine Sherwood were also in the original Broadway production. With Phillip Abbott, Mildred Dunnock, Corey Allen, Barry Cahill, Dub Taylor, James Douglas, Barry Atwater, James Chandler, Dorothy Konrad, Kelly Thordsen, Mike Steen, William Forrest, Davis Roberts, Roy E. Glenn, Sr. & Eddy Samuela.

  86/100. Geraldine Page gives one of the best performances of her illustrious career, if not her best. Paul Newman is magnificent, among his best five performances. The supporting cast is amazing. Madeleine Sherwood is incredible. Shirley Knight, Ed Begley, Rip Torn and Mildred Dunnock all deliver. Tennessee Williams can be a downer, but he also rights some powerful stuff, although this varies quite a bit from the book. Intense, extremely well produced in every aspect. Ed Begley won an Oscar, Page and Knight were nominated. Richard Brooks superbly directs the film with flair and style.

  First, the video/DVD link is for the made-for-television version of this play, starring Liz Taylor. There is a boxed Tennessee Williams film collection that has this one with Paul Newman and Geraldine Page (and it is also sold separately at Amazon). I think Page's performance is great. It's one of eight Academy Award-nominated performances for her and a role she had originally done on Broadway, directed by Elia Kazan. It's interesting that she's only 38 in real life when she plays this character and seems far from washed-out herself. She would go on to do other Williams' plays and eventually win the Oscar for 1985's 'The Trip to Bountiful.'
