  • Cliff Robertson saw more than one TV production he'd starred in turned into hit movies with other actors (such as Days of Wine and Roses), so when he starred in the 1961 "U.S. Steel Hour" production of "The Two Worlds of Charlie Gordon," based on the novella "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes, he bought the rights, and later was responsible for turning that story into this film.

An effort was made in 2004 to get the film on DVD and was announced for release in October. After news of a pan and scan release, noted DVD reviewer Christopher Bligh, petitioned the film to be released in its widescreen form. With 175 people signed, the date of the DVD release was changed from October to March and the format was changed from pan and scan to widescreen. This effort was reported in a February issue of the New York Times Magazine.
