5 stars for performances, directing and musical score. They don't do them like this anymore.

I saw this movie when i was 18 and was touched by it. A tender and sensitive picture. Hamlisch's score is so marvelous i cannot understand why is not commercially available: would someone pleeeease release a Hamlisch anthology with this beautiful theme? Now that he's gone it would be so relevant.

Walter Matthau gives a brilliant performance, and Jack Lemmon's sensitive direction makes this film a winner. It's a touching story and very well written. It's too bad Jack Lemmon didn't direct any other movies, he did such a terrific job here.

  • What a pleasant movie!

Turner Classic Movies seems to play the best "lesser known" little movies in the wee hours of the morning. I was able to catch the majority of this movie while preparing for work. It was very sweet. Matthau's performance was endearing. Very appropriate in this baby boom era when many are dealing with aging parents. The movie showed you that while one human being may be an annoyance and inconvenience to some, the same individual can be valuable and needed by others. Kotch was really the "hero" of this movie - not only in the fact that he delivered the yong girl's baby, but he ventured out and sought out a new life where he would not be viewed as a nuisance or a bother. I found myself to be "proud" of Kotch for his determination and success with finding a new life and purpose for himself. Lovely little movie!
