This movie of Miss Stanwyck, is a very touching family story. It is as good as her other family stories, such as Stella Dallas, No Man of Her Own and All I Desire.I only wished that she had acted in more serious family oriented shows, so that we could have enjoyed more of her strong family values and emotions. May all of her movies be available on Dvd, and the world will benefit greatly from her wonderful screen presence.

I'm a huge admirer of Barbara Stanwyck, and for that reason I've tried sitting through this movie more than once when it has shown up on TCM. But I always give up, defeated by the overbearing music score by Max Steiner. As is usual for this period, the music is pretty much non-stop, but that isn't the problem. It simply too often strikes an inappropriate tone for the story we're asked to take more or less seriously. Stanwyck is wonderful, of course, but her sincere performance is constantly undermined by the scampering, glossy giddiness of Steiner's vapid score, much of which sounds like it was written for a romantic comedy along the lines of "The Philadelphia Story." It just doesn't let up for a minute! Max Steiner was one of the greats, as everyone knows, but in "My Reputation" his miscalculations ruin, for this viewer anyway, an otherwise interesting film.

"My Reputation" (Warner Bros. 1946) IMO is one of Barbara Stanwyck's finest films. In it she gives a solid performance as war widow Jessica Drummond trying to ease her loneliness. She finds romance with Army major Scott Landis (George Brent), but creates a scandal because it's too soon after her husband's death. Ultimately she must let him go for the sake of her kids, but there's a bit of hope at the end when the major promises to return to her after the war (if the fates allow it). Eve Arden is also very good in her role as Jess's friend Ginna. I rate "My Reputation" three stars.

Barbara Stanwyck uplifts this fine melodrama. She is terrific as always. Great supporting cast, good screenplay. Nicely produced, a fine classic.

This Barbara Stanwyck is so good that I still remember seeing it once many, many years ago. I feel all her fans, myself included, would appreciate having this on DVD to watch again and again over the years.
