Love this film. I thought it was going to be a good one when I read the info on the schedule. But, wow, who would think a law school mock trial could have this much interest and suspense built in. Unfortunately, I missed the first 30 minutes of this great film. Please, please, TCM, would you please show this "keeper" again? Thank you, TCM. Keep these great gems coming. They just don't make movies like this anymore.

An interesting debate with a good heart

This is a very interesting film where a law student finds financial shortages early in the career of the current beloved mayor. Well acted, suspenseful picture. Fine performances by Dean Jones and Thomas Mitchell, and a good supporting cast.

I came across this wonderful film on TCM today and was completely awestruck. Firstly, the acting is simply top-notch. You couldn't have cast a better actor in the role of Mayor than Thomas Mitchell, and the upstart law student played by Dean Jones is Jones' finest performance. At its base, this film is about the fairness of the law and the fact that certain deeds fall into a gray area rather than always being so clear cut. The great Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo, know for his many landmark decisions, is cited near the end of the film. Cardozo believed in "relief for the overburdened" in the law and nothing illustrates his belief more than this film. It is very difficult to describe the film without giving away much of the ending and I will not do so. If you happen across this film when TCM shows it again, please do watch it. You will learn a lot about the history of our nation during the Dust Bowl days of the 1930s and you will come away with a great respect for our American farmers who stuck it out despite incredible odds. Superb film, worth your time and certainly worth a law school class viewing!
