  • Peck Against Type

Greg is a grieving widower pursuing revenge against the men he believes killed after raping his wife.He has a watch he carries with a photo of his wife and daughter and he meets the 4 briefly while they await justice for another crime(s).The town eagerly awaits the arrival of the hangman, but are they in for a surprise. They never hang, one does in a way,but they breakout, and Peck and posse ride after them.Found Lee Van Cleef totally sympathetic character, hated Salmi, detested Boyd (totally evil),okay Silva-not much explanation about his Mexican.Overall great film!

Greg Peck is an almost anti-Atticus Finch, pursuing the 4 men he believes murdered his wife.He kills 3 of the 4,until he meets with the 4th in Mexico and learns the truth.Much as he learns he was wrong, because his neighbor lied, don't feel too sorry for most of the killers. The sheriff is brutally attacked and left for dead, apparently rescued from what was certain demise to tell the churchgoing masses that the killers escaped, and the deputy,Primo leads a posse after them.Peck gets to kill 3 of the 4,repents what he's done, begs forgiveness, and is the hero to the townspeople,as it should be-after all, they were sentenced for another hanging offense, but don't think it was revealed as to what it was.And they had a honcho break them out of jail,so it must've been pretty bad.

Peck hunts the killers of his wife.He tracks them down to their scheduled hanging, but the walk to the gallows is not to be.The 4 accused killers all seem capable of murder and mayhem, judging by the breakout with the help of the semmingly real hangman.Everyone in town is at Mass when the murderers escape. They lead a merry chase, being caught one by one by Peck, with only Silva's character not being killed.Peck learns the truth from him,but don't cry for these killers. If only there'd been justice like this for the convicted and rightfully sentenced to death Cheshire,CT home invasion killers, who will never get their just desserts.Saw them in Boyd's bravado and just ending!

  • Gregory Peck Playing Against Type

Peck plays a believable grieving husband, who doggedly pursues his wife's killers to their impending hanging. Two of the intended death row inmates are unsympathetic,Salmi and Boyd's characters.Silva and Van Cleef are decent enough, whether killers or not, certainly not of Peck's wife.Didn't know the "hangman" was played by the future "Curly Joe" of 3 Stooges fame.Joan Collins plays a former acquaintance of Peck, and she's front and center thru the film.Peck hunts the 4 for the death,or what first seemed like the death of the sheriff, and his wife's rape and murder.Won't reveal the twist, but we only find out the truth when he chases the remaining 2 to Mexico, where the rest of the posse can't go.He kills Boyd, who really deserved his fate, should've been hanged by his feet like Salmi, and tortured because his aura was as such he was capable of the crime of rape and murder.Definitely highly recommended.
