As U. S. Marshal Johnny Reno rides toward Stone Junction, Kansas, in 1880, he becomes involved in a gunbattle with the Connors brothers, who mistakenly believe he is tracking them. Reno kills Ab Connors and captures Joe. At Stone Junction, Mayor Yates accuses Joe of having killed the son of Little Bear, an Indian chief. Reno wants Joe to have a fair trial, but Yates and the townspeople, fearing the Indians' wrath, want to lynch Joe, who claims he is innocent. Nona Williams, the saloonowner and Reno's former fiancée, helps Reno when an attempt is made to lynch Joe. When the townspeople decide to lynch Reno, Joe gives himself up on the condition that Reno be freed, but Yates doublecrosses him and plans to lynch them both. Actually, Yates had ordered his henchmen to kill Little Bear's son because the Indian was involved with Yates' daughter. Little Bear learns the truth and attacks the town. Yates is killed, and Reno and Nona ride off to start a new life together.
