  • An Impressive Movie

Although some of it is speculation this film does offer insight into the history of the Pilgrims. The title is from a novel published in 1950. The cast is outstanding and the music score is one of Miklos Rozsa's best. The opening song "Confess Jehovah Thankfully" is from the Ainsworth Psalter published in Holland in 1612 and brought to America by the Pilgrims in 1620.

Impressive production, fine art direction, the costumes are decent. It does lack period flavor though, the women's hairstyles have a 1950's look, but at least there was an effort made. Good and vivid color cinematography and sincere performances. Highly fictionalized, but after all it is Hollywood in 1952. An Oscar winner for best special effects. It's not a great film, but I was always interested in the story. Clarence Brown's last film.

  • A Great Film for a Uniquely "American" Holiday!

I remember watching this film on TV as a kid- in glorious Black & White - and loving every minute! It is truly stirring, as only Hollywood can make it, and yet not so hokey as to be unbearable. This should be a Thanksgiving tradition just as much as "Miracle On 34th Street". It's a terrific family film, about the only, strictly American holiday! I wish it were on DVD.

Loosely based on actual events, it is nonetheless a wonderfully entertaining picture. Spencer Tracy is perfect as the brooding Captain Christopher Jones, and Leo Genn does a fine job as William Bradford. Gene Tierney is perfect (as usual) As Mrs. Bradford, and Lloyd Bridges is a wondefully rascally first mate. This should be a Thanksgiving tradition.
