Good in-joke

Louis Wolheim's last movie released before his death from cancer contains a good in-joke. After Wolheim makes the moves on Mary Astor, she tells her husband that he "tried to play the 'Hairy Ape' gag on me." Wolheim was famous on Broadway as the originator of Eugene O'Neill's "The Hairy Ape." Otherwise "The Sin Ship" seems a little old even for early 1931 with poor sound and very early talkie staging. Wolheim, here also in his only directing job, lets his actors play as if on stage. Astor, a ten-year screen veteran at 24, is the only one to tone her performance down to a screen standard.
