Mike Windgren arrives in Acapulco as a sailor on a yacht. When he loses his position, Raoul, a shoeshine boy who has heard him sing, becomes his manager and gets him a job as both a fill-in singer for the temperamental featured performer at the Hilton Hotel and as siesta-time fill-in for Moreno, lifeguard at the hotel pool. Moreno also makes the 136-foot dive every evening from La Quebrada for the entertainment of spectators. Mike becomes involved with Dolores, a woman bullfighter, and Maggie, the hotel's assistant social director. Moreno is infatuated with Maggie and becomes jealous of Mike. Raoul obtains additional singing engagements for Mike in other Acapulco clubs, where he is well received. Moreno learns that Mike has been a trapezist in an American circus but developed a fear of height after an accident cost the life of his partner. The two men fight, and Moreno is injured just enough to prevent his dive at La Quebrada that night. Conquering his fear, Mike substitutes for Moreno and makes a perfect dive. With Maggie and Raoul he plans to return to his circus act in the States.
