  • One of the Finest !

Saw Ulzana on a double bill with When Legends Die, a modern western with Richard Widmark, and after 4 hours of whites vs Native Americans, I felt very guilty being descended from Irish immigrants. Ulzana is the finest Cavalry vs the Indians movies ever made. Critics dismissed it for it's violence. But this script is well researched and the lead cast both White and Red, are magnificent. Lancaster is great as the grizzled old scout. Jorge Luke as his fellow scout is perfect. Richard Jaekal is a stalwart. If you watch closely, you'll see Richard Farnsworth as a doomed old trooper, and Scott Glenn who survives a little longer. Conservative critics didn't like the parallels the script made to our involvement in Vietnam. But it's a very thrilling 'chess game' that Lancaster plays with Juaquin Martinez as Ulzana. Put it on your to-see list.

  • One of the best ever - cavalry vs. Apache

Well plotted and acted. A vivid portrayal of the hardships and peril involved in settling the west and the toughness of the men and women who were there. Strong characterizations by Burt Lancaster as the white scout; by Jorge Luke as his Apache associate; and by Bruce Davison as the inexperienced army officer struggling to understand his quarry. Perceptive insights regarding the mindset of the raiding Apache warriors and the soldiers pursuing them. Action in microcosm; a small detail of cavalry dealing with an even smaller group of Apache determined to preserve their way of life.
