Meshes of the Afternoon (1944)

Meshes of the Afternoon (1943): Ukrainian-born Maya Deren collaborated with then-husband Alexander Hammid on this symbolic study of a woman's psyche, also a significant influence on horror films such as Roman Polanski's Repulsion (1965). The camera and the protagonist (Deren herself) masterfully seem to be floating through the eerie space of the Los Angeles house in which it was filmed with a 16mm Bolex camera Deren bought with the inheritance from her late father.
