Her Cardboard Lover
It is a pity that Norma felt obliged to bow out of acting with a film so severely panned by the critics. She deserved a far better finale, and remains my all-time favorite actress; "Cardboard" notwithstanding.
This is my favorite movie!
I absolutely love this movie! I'm so sad that this has not been released from the vault and is not for sale...I saw this movie one night on tv and have been trying to find it ever since. It's will make you laugh, cry (probably from laughing) and fall in love :O)~Jessica
I found this movie endearing and adorable. The ending is a bit too brief, but I still loved it!
I love this film!
This film is great! I've seen it previously on TCM and can't wait for it to be back on the schedule as I have found that is it not for sale. :-( I am not sure why this film did not do well. It was funny and kept up the pace. Perhaps it was just not what the public was looking for at the time it was released. It is a story of a love-struck song writer who gets in over his head and finds himself needing to repay a debt to the women of his dreams. Mix in an old flame and the laughter can't be helped. I think to introduce it to the classic film viewers and collectors today would be welcomed and accepted well. Robert Taylor is very charming. Whether you love him or hate him, George Sanders always knew what to say and how to say it. The basement scene is priceless. I like Ava and felt she was the perfect maid for Norma Shearer's character. The song "I Dare You" was lovely. I truly believe that people will enjoy this movie once they get to watch it.
Good Clean Fun
I saw this movie only recently on TCM and loved it. Not because it was the best acting or the best directing I have ever seen. But because it brings a sense of good clean fun and humor to the screen. I wanted to add it to my collection of movies and was saddened to see it was not for sale. I found Robert Taylor to be quite charming and liked seeing him in a lighthearted role. Norma Shearer I felt went a little over with her acting but Robert balanced her in charm. George Sanders has a charisma about him he plays well. I love "I Dare You" and wish I could find the music for it. Overall I can see why this movie did not do well but still think it would be a nice piece in my collection when I am in the mood for something lighthearted and fun.
Her Cardboard Film!
- Steve S.
As Garbo did the previous year, Norma Shearer leaves the big screen with a whimper and not a bang. The screenplay and acting are lame. The only saving grace for this film is Ms. Shearer's beauty & comedic ability.Taylor & Sander's are both wasted in this dog. However, since it is Norma's swan song I recommend that it be seen my classic movie buff's.
