  An absolute knock-out movie. I wikipedia'd 'Primo Carnera' when the movie was done and I'm not even a boxing fan! The cast was great including Rod Steiger as Nick Benko, Nehemiah Persoff as Leo (a personal favourite) and Bogart! Man, the whole thing was electric from start to finish. I stumbled on to this movie, just to see what was on and 'a classic' that I almost missed. Keep that remote flipping because you never know...D. Benson (TCM fan)

  I've seen every fight film out there and there is none better than this one! It exposes what actually goes on in the boxing game and it is simply horrific. Bogie and Steiger give terrific performances here but it is the story itself that gets to you. The purses are much bigger now but the corruptions prevalent back in the day are just as prevalent today. At my Grandfather's knee, I watched the Gillette Friday Night Fights way back in the '50s. when fighters like Dick Tiger, Ezzard Charles and Sugar Ray Robinson fought. Of course, the man of the decade was Rocky Marciano. Not one of these men ever even made a decent living because of the terrible corruption of the day. This film tells you why!

  rod steiger was vicious and direct, humphrey bogart,more of a compassionate character as the movie played out to not by any surprise made by what happens when reality looks you right in your face.that is what happened to joe louis,muhammed ali,the likelihood of a champion and the demise of their tomorrow......

  Bogarts last.. What else needs to be said.. A must see.. Solid all around.. Especially Bogarts mammoth effort of a performance.. Talk about "going down swinging"..

  This is Humphrey Bogart's last film, and it's pretty obvious he was ill when it was being filmed. But in spite of that, he delivers a biting and memorable performance. He went out in style, that's for sure. The use of former boxers in the cast (Jersey Joe Walcott, Max Baer and Joe Greb) was a fascinating and effective touch. Joe Greb was particularly memorable as skid row bum being interviewed. Great story and thought provoking, good supporting performance by Rod Steiger. The stark black and white cinematography is very potent. The score is excellent. Apparently Humphrey Bogart was not to fond of Rod Steiger's style of acting, if so, it sure didn't show in the final production.

  He looks like he's in pain while making this film. It's sad to see how puffed up his face is and how different he looks from work he finished just the year before. I also find the plot of this movie to be a retread. By this point, had he lived, Bogey was in need of new material and really needed to reinvent his image. Just like Edward G. Robinson, he had made a career out of playing variations on the gangster theme. It would've been nice to have seen him in a frothy comedy or in a western (he was interesting as a creepy bandit in 'Virginia City'). At least he went out on top and didn't have to suffer a decline into playing second leads and supporting parts.

  Sad to see Bogie near the end, but great performance nontheless. Great interplay between Bogart and Rod Steiger.
