  Nice summary of the film. However, you mention that THE PAWNBROKER was Mr. Steiger's first Oscar nod; he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for ON THE WATERFRONT in 1954.

• Finally, "The Sergeant"

  I saw "The Sergeant" 40 years ago in Hue Phu Bai just after returning to Vietnam for my second tour of duty. It is a believable story and Steiger nailed the role. I knew nothing about the synopsis and the main story line didn't become clear to me until over halfway through the movie, which was a nice touch. About ten years ago I wanted to see the movie again and couldn't find it anywhere. Now it's here. Thank you, TCM, for putting it on the schedule. My alarm clock is already set for O:Dark Thirty tomorrow morning.
