Would Gladly Have Rathbone Anyday

Maybe she was a bored housewife,but she was a cuckold.Should have just taken her son and left,but was stupid enough to fall for wimpy March,who's supposed to be the big hero.Big dud more like it
Doomed Love Story

Don't know or care if true to the book.Great production,only drag is March,and I like him,usually.To me,he's more cruel than Karenin,until Anna is barred from her son's life.She may have fared better if she waited for him to grow up and out of Karenin's clutches.Great work seeing Freddie and Basil in another classic,this time father and son vs stepdad.Felt Garbo was kinda boring,more the aggressor to lover than other way around.
Basil Rathbone is Great
In the TCM article, they never mention Rathbone as Karenin. It's not a very big role, but Rathbone manages to show that Karenin suffers too. He is hard and cold, but still he suffers from Anna's indifference and when he sees his son's obvious preference for his mother. We don't like Karenin in this story, but Rathbone makes him hard, cold, unbending, cruel and human.
Very deep movie. The final scene is heartbreaking.
One of Garbo's Best
How could anyone say that Norma Shearer would be better than Garbo in this film? She won the NY Critics Award that year for Anna K. It's not my favorite Garbo film, but she does a wonderful job as always, especially the scenes with her son.

Este filme é um clássico. Maravilhoso ver a diva Greta Garbo interpretando Anna Karenina. Uma mulher que sofre por não conseguir o divórcio por ser infeliz no casamento e por sofrer por não ser livre para viver seu amor pelo Conde Vronsky. Os dois se tornam amantes. A Greta interpreta divinamente esta personagem, pois o semblante de sua personagem é de culpa, angústia até do próprio adultério que era considerado um tabu na época do filme. Um filme baseado no romance de Leo Tolstoy. Eu fiquei decepcionada pelo filme não estar no acervo de filmes do TCM, pois eu como telespectadora acho um pecado não ter um filme clássico como este. E até para que nós telespectadores tenhamos a oportunidade de ver o filme que já deve ter sido lançado em DVD. A Greta é uma diva. Anna Karenina é um grande filme em todos os sentidos.
Inferior to Vivien Leigh version

In many ways, this first sound version of 'Anna Karenina' looks to be a success. But when compared with the British version of 1947, starring Vivien Leigh, one can see how lacking it is. Let's look at what it has, followed by what it doesn't have, in comparison to the later project. What it has: a huge MGM budget; Garbo in her prime; excellent cinematography; and some other fine stars from MGM's glory days, including May Robson, Freddie Bartholomew, and Basil Rathbone (who is very good). What it doesn't have: fidelity to Tolstoy's classic story; a willingness to subdue Garbo so that she is playing Anna instead of herself; and a tighter economy of scenes. The British version fares much better. It eliminates the clunky scene with March and the men at the beginning and focuses immediately on Anna, visiting Moscow by train. It also allows Tolstoy's dialogue to play out as it was originally written. In the Hollywood version, producer David Selznick, whom I usually like, has added a lot of contemporary dialogue about how a man needs his work but should value his wife. There is also a phony epilogue added at the end, after Anna's death. This is not Tolstoy, but it is Tolstoy according to Selznick. Also, Selznick has added scenes that feature Anna and her son, so as to beef up Freddie Bartholomew's part. The British film shows just how restricted Anna is in getting to see how son one last time. As for the lead actresses, I don't think Garbo really delved into the part. Leigh, in contrast, absorbed Tolstoy's character, and imbued Anna with a haunted sense of life, choice, consequence and fate.
A Russian Tragedy - A Movie Triumph

I will always marvel at how this complex classical novel could be brought to the screen. Yet, I marvel the same about Doctor Zhivago. Like Zhivago, filmed decades later, Anna Karenina captures the lavish Russian lifestyle of the era. Both are very atmospheric. And Greta Garbo's beauty simply shines out. Both novels, of course, end in tragedy, but both movies are triumphant masterpieces.
