Watched it last night. It was slow and just didnt hold interest like other films of this nature. Faye Dunaway looked stunning but a nothing role for her. Can see why it totally bombed out at the box office.

  • A DEEPLY MOVING WELL-MADE FILM

This reviewer has seen many movies o n the holocaust, from "THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK", "CONSPIRACY OF HEARTS",to "SCHINDLER'S LIST" and everyone of them. But the one that was my number one favorite in 1976 was the deeply moving and emotional "VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED". This movie tells the story of over 900 german jews who thaught that they were on their way to freedom in Cuba. unknown to them and the captain Schroeder of their ship, the SAINT LOUIS, their flight to freedom is a sham and they are not permiited to land when they arrive in Havana. Every form of human emotion is expressed by the cast-the scene in which the Captain (MAX VON SYDOW)Learns the truth from HOFFMANN, played by the late renowned german character actor GUNTHER MEISNER, who is best remembered for his portrayal of HITLER in "THE WINDS OF WAR. Other fine emotional scenes are FAYE DUNAWAY'S with LEE GRANT, the rending of the garment performed by WENDY HILLER portraying Rebecca Weiler, the emotional visit by MIRA (KATHARINE ROSS) to her parents on board (NEHEMIAH PERSOFF, MARIA SCHELL). The diecting is done with such sensitivity that when the movie reached its conclusion I felt that I had come to know those 900 souls very deeply.
