Maybe the worst bio pic of an artist in Hollywood history. Absolutely nada on what made Goya a brilliant, unique painter. Plus, what is even more absurd, we don't even get to see any of the guy's paintings other than in brief snippets or as background to the endless parade of flamenco dancing, fighting, drinking, and walking around palaces in costumes that try to fill the gaping two hours of this empty film. I watched it for about an hour, until not even Ava's sensual beauty could interest me and then flipped the switch. Give it a D plus. P.S. I heard from Ben Mankewiecz that, during filming, Tony Franciosa punched a paparazzi. Hey, if I had to mouth Norman Corwin's abysmally bad dialogue ("I paint what I seeI paint what I feel" "The truth is not always pretty" ) I'd wanna deck a photog too.

I was channel surfing one morning and I came across this interesting movie in color with Ava Gardner and Tony Franciosa (and another actor I did not recognize). This was a Spanish War movie and these three main characters were involved in a love triangle. This film held my interest mainly because it was not dubbed in English and the acting was believable. Good movie..........
Whyt that movie title?

I'm not a fan of either Franciosa or Ava, but I recently saw a film about Goya with Natalie Portman running afoul of the Inquisition -- titles something like Goya's Sketchbook or something. But I was dazzled by this production as someone here said -- the costumes, the music, the dancing, the passion. When it was over I thought to myself 'that is an excellent bodice ripper novel for housewives who aspired to be a duchesses who could sway thrones and play with many lovers. Still, it has to rate more that 3.5 starts. For 1959 this is a mature "art" film. Well worth our time.
I didn't read the article for this film before watching it, didn't want to be swayed by the comments there. The only review posted here before the film aired tonight was the one in a language I can't read. I started watching, ready to be dazzled by Ava Gardner. Wow! I wasn't expecting such an awful film. Poor acting overall & the final scene is so hokey that it comes off almost as a parody of 50's period costume dramas. Tony Fransciosa's acting, method acting supposedly, is some of the worst I've ever seen on TCM. Was he seriously acting or making fun of his character? Location shots are beautiful. Nice Technicolor & costumes. Most of the dialog is absurd. It's obvious that much of the dialog is dubbed & it's distracting. The dance scenes were OK but the bulk of this film is so bad they can't save it at all for me.
The Naked Maja -- Spanish Passion
I cannot express how much I love "The Naked Maja". The music, the dancing, the passion. The fierce acting keeps a dangerous tension throughout the picture. That short but seductive Spanish dance duet that Marie & Paco do in the middle of the film leaves me breathless. It may not be high on technique but it delivers the wordless message of dance as dance should. It is seduction personified. It might be Hollywood but I find it a tremendous love story, unpretentious and soulful.
