Bette Davis: The Other Woman
It's now 1934. Bette Davis and George Brent have already been in a bunch of films together and become 'fond' of each other off set. I love pre-code films for this reason: they present the real moralities of the era. Davis plays the other woman who's having an affair with Brent, who's a married man with a child. Davis has come into his life through his business as a colleague but she's also boosted his esteem when he neeeded it to be more successful. Davis doesn't wind up with her man. But it's the kind of film that doesn't want her to.
Pre-Code Adultery between Davis & Brent
No wonder Bette Davis had a crush on George Brent: they played in so many films together as lovers and married couples. In this pre-code drama, Davis is Pat, a career woman who works with Bill (Brent), who's married to Nan (Dvorek). When Pat comes into the company with lots of new ideas, her career takes off. Bill's is stagnating. But his wife, Nan, a friend of Pat's, has better ideas than her husband. With her encouragement, the housewife's husband opens his own business. Trouble is he takes Pat with him and they become lovers and Nan knows. Good old pre-code drama with young Bette Davis who's at her break-through period. Brent gives his usual reliable performance. Davis is already stealing the scenes, however.

"Housewife" is a great little pre-code gem produced in the last months before industrywide censorship was imposed. The story pits loyal housewife Ann Dvorak against the wily Bettie Davis for the love of Ann's well-to-do husband played by the dashing George Brent. Things heat up when George hits the big time after having been supported at home in their early, struggling years by the beautiful but hard-working Ann. At a swank dinner party Bettie lays it on heavy and gets some serious makeup on George's collar!Rats. Because of a power outage caused by a storm, I missed the ending so I'm not able to give much more but I liked the first part and would like to see TCM play it again soon!
