Just watched the second time and though not as great as Third Man and other Graham Greene adaptations, its still decent for lack of senstationalism, the cast and the story material. Underrated in a minor way.

This movie is not Casablanca (nor are many other good movies) but I still liked it. Boyer is not my first choice for a secret agent but I found the film worth watching.

An absolute failure. The lead roles are horribly miscast. Boyer as a secret agent fighting for Spain? At least give him a Spanish accent or better yet get Bogie or someone else, anyone else. I swear Don Knotts would have been more believelabe. And Bacall the daughter of an English nobleman? Not for a second. Any young English actress would have been preferable. Also she acts like Bacall - no one is Bacall but she's no English lady. To boot they both sleepwalk through their parts and even they fall in love the chemistry is zilch, nada, zippo. Then plot is insipid and I had to struggle to get through it. Did Graham Greene really write this?

72/100. Not in the RT database at the time of this review. Intriguing story, with a feeling and dark atmosphere similar to "Casablanca." Based on a Grahame Greene novel, the story is suspenseful. Good cast. Charles Boyer is effective as Luis Denard, who is an anti fascist secret agent in the Spanish Civil War. He meets Rose Cullard, seductively played by Lauren Bacall and they fall in love. Good support from Katina Paxinou and Peter Lorre. The story isn't that original, but the direction is good, as is the cinematography and score.
